SUMMARY:The 9th Annual Taos Writers Conference
DESCRIPTION:A full weekend of workshops on fiction\, creative nonfiction\, memoir\, poetry\, essays & more!\nLimited-seating live sessions as well as online via Zoom.\n\nI’ll be presenting a three hour intensive on Saturday to introduce and develop the use of all five senses in writing fiction\, nonfiction or poetry\, specifically focusing on the sense of smell. Although often considered the most evocative of the five senses\, writers seldom use its power to create and communicate both physical settings and emotional states. \nEach participant should bring an item whose smell–bad or good–is evocative. We will write a paragraph describing the memories\, thoughts or feelings this smell inspires. We will read these paragraphs and imagine ways it might lead to a scene in your memoir. \nI will bring some samples from my box labeled\, “A Writer’s Nose”\, including a cigar\, saffron\, lavender etc. We will each chose one of these samples and write a paragraph describing the smell and what memories or feelings or thoughts it inspires. We will read these aloud and comment. \nThe sense of taste is associated with the sense of smell. In fact\, someone who loses one often loses the other. You may want to include the sense of taste\, as in Marcel Proust’s description in “In Search of Lost Time”: \n“The taste was that of was that of a little piece of madeleine which on Sunday mornings when I went to say good morning to her in her bedroom\, my aunt Leonie used to give me\, dipping it first in her cup of tea…” \nButtery? Sugary? Proust doesn’t say. But we are free to imagine. \n\nFaculty Reading and Book Signing on Saturday\, July 26th\, 2025\, at 5:30pm \nLunch roundtable discussions on Self-Publishing and Publishing Short Stories \nEarly Bird Registration by end of day 6/28/25: \n\n$499 all three days\, including faculty readings\, keynote reading\, receptions\, and lunch roundtable discussions\n$335 for three weekend workshops (3 hours each) plus all of the above\n$175 Friday Intensive (6 hours) only plus all of the above\n\nLate registration beginning 6/29/25 \n\n$569 for all three days\n$385 for all three weekend workshops\n$199 for Friday Intensive\n\nKeynote reading (only) by Nick Flynn: Friday\, 7/25/25 at 5:30pm\, $10/SOMOS members; $15/nonmembers \nEnroll \nShareTweetShareBuffer0 Shares

SUMMARY:Reading with Rebecca Reynolds at SOMOS\, in Taos
DESCRIPTION:On November 1st\, I’ll be reading with Rebecca Reynolds for the 8th Annual Prose Month at SOMOS. The event is free. I hope you’ll join us! \nRebecca Reynolds has pioneered new methods and models to bring about change in diverse and far-reaching projects under the auspices of her firm\, Rebecca Reynolds Consulting. She works with organizations and leads multi-entity projects\, advises executives\, coaches teams and individuals\, and mentors emerging entrepreneurs. She writes fiction and nonfiction. \nThresholds of Change: The Way through Transformational Times offers a timely and hopeful approach to how we think about change\, based on the author’s 30-year career bringing about change in hundreds of projects\, crossing disciplines\, locations and people. Instead of approaching change from whether we like it or want it\, Reynolds suggests looking for what it wants from us. Change\, like the seasons\, is a distinct process with its own sequence of phases. She offers a clear picture of how the process works — the mechanics that operate no matter where change happens or how we react to it. This underlying process can be learned and with it\, our innate ability to adapt increases. With this universal process\, we’re able to navigate change with greater ease\, confidence\, and purpose. And we’re able to use the changes in our lives as they’re intended: the way to reach our human potential. \n \nShareTweetShareBuffer0 Shares

SUMMARY:Sallie Bingham\, Steve Fox and Lucy Herrman
DESCRIPTION:Sallie Bingham\, Steve Fox and Lucy Herrman All 2022 November Prose Month readings are free and donations are always welcome to support SOMOS’ literary programs. \nSallie Bingham is the author of fifteen books\, including The Blue Box: Three Lives in Letters; Passion and Prejudice; and Mending: New & Selected Short Stories. She will read from her latest memoir\, Little Brother\, about her youngest brother’s tragic and truncated life. \nSteve Fox is a writer and photographer born in Washington\, D.C. who has lived in Taos for 21 years. He has a PhD in American Studies from UNM where he was awarded a two-year Fulbright Visiting Professorship in Germany. He last taught at UNM-Taos for eight years. He is the author of Toxic Work: Women Workers at GTE-Lenkurt and the memoir Odyssey: Love and Terror in Greece\, 1969. He wrote and edited for the Horse Fly in Taos and wrote for NM News Service\, which syndicated 125 of his columns statewide. He is married to the architectural designer Donna LeFurgey. They live in El Prado. \nLucy Herrman is a writer\, poet\, artist\, and chef. Her poetry and prose have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines. In the 1970s\, she founded and published the Chicago literary small press\, Syncline. She currently writes the food column for the Taos News. Ms. Herrman lives in New Mexico with her husband\, Dirk. They have two sons. \nIn 2011\, while skiing in Colorado\, Lucy Herrman’s husband Dirk suffered an aortic dissection\, an almost-always fatal tearing of the lining of the aorta. Some well-known victims of aortic dissections include Richard Holbrooke\, John Ritter\, Alan Thicke\, and Bill Paxton to name a few. Miraculously\, Dirk was one of the rare survivors. But as he later said\, “When you cheat Death\, Death doesn’t let go so easily.” Take Another Piece of My Heart is the thrilling first-person account of a harrowing medical journey from the perspective of the woman who mustered strength and hope on the sidelines. \nShareTweetShareBuffer0 Shares
