SUMMARY:Beyond Memoir: Empowering the Imagination by Writing Historical Fiction – Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:To prepare for this workshop\, please read my book Taken by the Shawnee. \nThe workshop will begin with a discussion of memoir; if you are working on one\, you will have a chance to read five pages and discuss. We will consider the questions “how does memoir differ from historical fiction?” and “what value can knowledge of the history of a time and place add to these genres?” We will discuss Margaret Erskine’s brief account of her four years in a Shawnee camp and consider how research expands her memoir. Finally\, using an example from your own experience\, you will present a short biographical draft (under five pages) incorporating research-informed historical details to expand the subject’s time and place. \nThis class is suitable for intermediate levels. \nFor more information and to register\, visit the Carnegie Center website. \nShareTweetShareBuffer0 Shares

SUMMARY:Writing Memoir/Writing History – Spring 2024
DESCRIPTION:I believe that the genre of memoir\, somewhat overused now\, can be refreshed and made more relevant by considering the fact that when we write memoir we are in fact writing history. Especially as women\, we have access to the forgotten or ignored cracks and crannies of life. We rely on research\, especially with family documents and photographs—wills\, letters\, news stories\, obituaries—of people “of no importance” whose crucial stories are so often left out of official histories. \nThe class meets in-person on Friday\, April 26\, 4:30-7:30PM and on Saturday & Sunday\, April 27 & 28\, 11:00AM–2:00PM \nThis class is suitable for intermediate level writers. \nRegistration for this in-person workshop is now open. \nShareTweetShareBuffer0 Shares
