DESCRIPTION:From 9am to 12pm on Saturday\, July 25th\, I’ll be teaching a workshop entitled\, Notching it up: Using reading and writing to sharpen your writing skills.  The brief chat below has more information about the content of the workshop.  The workshop is included in the Weekend Workshops package.  You may enroll on the SOMOS website. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFull Details:\nCalling all writers! SOMOS is excited to announce that registrations are open for the 4th Annual Taos Writers Conference on the same dates as originally scheduled on Friday\, July 24th – Sunday\, July 26th\, 2020 in an online format. Check out the schedule page for updates in descriptions and faculty. Many of the instructors are currently using zoom and will be experts by July! The conference will still offer an evening of faculty readings\, a virtual bookshop\, lunch roundtables\, and a keynote reading. Bring your own pen\, paper and coffee/tea and be ready to write. \nIn light of these times we have reduced all or our prices by up to $30 for each workshop/intensive and extended our early bird registration to 7/1/20 and made our cancellation fees more generous:  100% refund minus a $35 administrative fee for cancellations dated 7/1/20 or earlier; 50% refund minus the administrative fee for cancellations received between 7/2 – 7/15/20.  No refunds given for cancellations after 7/16/20. Once you have registered and paid for either the Friday Intensive\, the Weekend Workshops or both we will forward you a confirmation and the zoom credentials to attend the workshop. DESCRIPTION:Family Documents Through the Fiction Writer’s Perspective\nMy experience of discovering letters\, diaries and writings left by my mother\, grandmother and great-grandmother\, which became The Blue Box: Three Lives in Letters.  These women left a strong tradition of writing which carries on to me today\, and to another generation with my niece\, Emily. \nThis program will appeal to writers\, historians and genealogists who share the interest of bringing the past to the present and the discoveries made in doing so. What to do with them? The writers are not well known and in fact may be long forgotten\, but their letters capture an important slice of the past. How to connect all these letters and\, even more important\, how to turn them into art. Participants might want to read author Sallie Bingham’s recently published The Blue Box: Three Lives in Letters\, published by Sarabande Books. She will be using the text for examples of her method.

SUMMARY:The Blue Box To Be Published by Sarabande Books
DESCRIPTION:My latest work\, entitled The Blue Box\, will be published in August of 2014 by Sarabande Books. \nFrom roughly 2008—2011 (I think—time has a way of lengthening\, then shortening dramatically)\, I’ve had the deep pleasure and privilege of working on a collection of papers found in the top of my mother’s closet after she died\, letters from long forgotten relatives\, mainly women\, in Virginia\, West Virginia and Georgia\, covering more than 150 years.\n\nI’m calling the book that resulted\, The Blue Box\, to commemorate the large\, sky-blue box in which my sister Eleanor found this treasure trove\, all carefully bundled and annotated by a relative I never knew who did the collecting and annotating fifty years ago before sending it on to my mother. \nPerhaps he hoped she’d read them; apparently\, she didn’t—there is only one sentence in her handwriting\, deploring a great-grandmother’s “religious fanaticism”. \nPerhaps he hoped they would go to an archive. \nThey didn’t. These women were not rich\, or famous\, or beautiful\, or well-known for scandals or achievements. \nBut they are united by an iron thread: they were indomitable. \nSewing pelisses to sell to survive the devastation of their plantation on the Etowah River in Georgia after Sherman’s march to the sea; turning their pretty daughters into stocks to be marketed to the most affluent available men; chasing down a scholarship to become the first college graduate in her family\, and then laying a four year siege to a reluctant lover: They did more than survive. SUMMARY:Envisioning the Future of the Sallie Bingham Center
DESCRIPTION:The Bingham Center will host an evening with author\, playwright\, teacher and feminist activist Sallie Bingham\, who will reflect on 25 years of documenting women’s history at Duke and offer her vision for the Center’s next 25 years\, and Rachel Seidman\, Associate Director\, Southern Oral History Program\, at UNC-Chapel Hill and visiting lecturer in Women’s Studies at Duke University\, who will give her perspective on Bingham Center contributions to preservation\, teaching\, and activism.  \nIn 1988\, the Women’s Studies Archivist position was created thanks to the generosity of author\, playwright\, teacher and feminist activist Sallie Bingham. In collaboration with pioneering historian Anne Firor Scott\, Duke Women’s Studies’ Founding Director Jean Fox O’Barr and then head of Special Collections Robert Byrd\, Sallie Bingham determined that Duke was the right place to create a new archive for women’s history.
