SUMMARY:Author Event at Travel Bug with Sallie Bingham
DESCRIPTION:Following my incredibly successful reading at Travel Bug for Little Brother\, I’m very much looking forward to the first reading of my latest title here in Santa Fe. The event is free\, no registration is required. \nI very much look forward to seeing you! \nBingham recounts this fascinating story of capture\, survival\, progress\, healing\, and return with lush descriptions and respect for all involved with Margaret’s complicated story. She is a smart and empathetic writer\, and has created an awesome account of female survival at a horrific time.”— Booklist

SUMMARY:Writing Memoir/Writing History – Spring 2024
DESCRIPTION:I believe that the genre of memoir\, somewhat overused now\, can be refreshed and made more relevant by considering the fact that when we write memoir we are in fact writing history. Especially as women\, we have access to the forgotten or ignored cracks and crannies of life. We rely on research\, especially with family documents and photographs—wills\, letters\, news stories\, obituaries—of people “of no importance” whose crucial stories are so often left out of official histories. \nThe class meets in-person on Friday\, April 26\, 4:30-7:30PM and on Saturday & Sunday\, April 27 & 28\, 11:00AM–2:00PM \nThis class is suitable for intermediate level writers. \nRegistration for this in-person workshop is now open.

SUMMARY:Kathy Schulz\, The Underground Railroad in Ohio
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be interviewing Kathy Schultz on her book\, The Underground Railroad in Ohio. We’ll talk from 6-7pm and then sign books following the discussion. \nThis event will also be livestreamed on Zoom. You may register at this link. \nFrom Collected Works: \nTwo “daughters of the Ohio Valley” whose works have been inspired by their ancestors will share their stories and discuss the impact on their writings. \nDuring a dark time in our history\, thousands of freedom seekers traveled the Underground Railroad though Ohio. The Buckeye State hosted about half of all fugitive slave traffic of the antebellum era. A mix of Northern and Southern settlers in the state added drama to a struggle that led to major benefits for the state and the country. Unfortunately\, this epic past was obscured by silence and secrecy and then distorted with misinformation and folklore—until now. Author and native Ohioan Kathy Schulz accurately details the development and workings of Ohio’s Underground Railroad with true stories of Addison White\, John Parker and others. \nLogistics: \nThere is a ramp off the Water Street parking for anyone in a wheelchair and we can provide adequate reserved space to accommodate same. It calls for a longer walk than coming in the Galisteo Street door\, where one can be dropped with a one-step off the sidewalk. Please let us know about wheelchair access needed or anyone on a walker or whatever to prefer that entrance. Call the store when you are in the parking lot\, and we can go out and escort. \nWheelchair reserve space is to the left of the stage\, up front. In addition\, we will reserve nine spaces in the first two rows directly in front of the stage for your use.

SUMMARY:Readings with Authors Joan Brooks Baker & Sallie Bingham
DESCRIPTION:Joan Brooks Baker was born in 1944\, and brought up in New York City by dyed-in-the-wool Southern parents. At age eleven she was taught how to make a pinhole camera with a shoebox\, which she took\, along with her deep curiosity\, down the city’s streets\, Central Park or just simply the subway. She came to understand that she was making mental snapshots in order to create sense out of the chaos in her life. \nJoan has exhibited her photographs and photographic monoprints in several galleries\, mainly in Santa Fe\, New Mexico and New York City. The United Nations “70 women from 50 countries” exhibit featured Joan’s images of India’s female garbage workers. \nHer work has been featured in Cross by Kelly Klein\, Searching for Mary Magdalene: A Journey Through Art and Literature by Jane Lahr\, Ms. Magazine\, Men’s Vogue and Town & Country magazine\, The Dead Mule of Southern Literature; Symbols of Faith\, A Visual Journey to the Historic Churches of New Mexico\, to name a few. Her last photographic project\, and one that spanned several years\, was of The Black Madonna. In her search to find the meaning of this icon’s legend\, Joan began to relate the Black Madonna’s narrative to women she admired and to herself. \nIt was through the Black Madonna presentation that she was inspired to write her memoir\, The Magnolia Code. \nLearn more about Joan Brooks Baker at https://www.joanbrooksbaker.com/

SUMMARY:Sallie Bingham\, Steve Fox and Lucy Herrman
DESCRIPTION:Sallie Bingham\, Steve Fox and Lucy Herrman All 2022 November Prose Month readings are free and donations are always welcome to support SOMOS’ literary programs. \nSallie Bingham is the author of fifteen books\, including The Blue Box: Three Lives in Letters; Passion and Prejudice; and Mending: New & Selected Short Stories. She will read from her latest memoir\, Little Brother\, about her youngest brother’s tragic and truncated life. \nSteve Fox is a writer and photographer born in Washington\, D.C. who has lived in Taos for 21 years. He has a PhD in American Studies from UNM where he was awarded a two-year Fulbright Visiting Professorship in Germany. He last taught at UNM-Taos for eight years. He is the author of Toxic Work: Women Workers at GTE-Lenkurt and the memoir Odyssey: Love and Terror in Greece\, 1969. He wrote and edited for the Horse Fly in Taos and wrote for NM News Service\, which syndicated 125 of his columns statewide. He is married to the architectural designer Donna LeFurgey. They live in El Prado. \nLucy Herrman is a writer\, poet\, artist\, and chef. Her poetry and prose have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines. In the 1970s\, she founded and published the Chicago literary small press\, Syncline. She currently writes the food column for the Taos News. Ms. Herrman lives in New Mexico with her husband\, Dirk. They have two sons. \nIn 2011\, while skiing in Colorado\, Lucy Herrman’s husband Dirk suffered an aortic dissection\, an almost-always fatal tearing of the lining of the aorta. Some well-known victims of aortic dissections include Richard Holbrooke\, John Ritter\, Alan Thicke\, and Bill Paxton to name a few. Miraculously\, Dirk was one of the rare survivors. But as he later said\, “When you cheat Death\, Death doesn’t let go so easily.” Take Another Piece of My Heart is the thrilling first-person account of a harrowing medical journey from the perspective of the woman who mustered strength and hope on the sidelines.

SUMMARY:Weaving the Past into the Present
DESCRIPTION:Family Documents Through the Fiction Writer’s Perspective\nMy experience of discovering letters\, diaries and writings left by my mother\, grandmother and great-grandmother\, which became The Blue Box: Three Lives in Letters. These women left a strong tradition of writing which carries on to me today\, and to another generation with my niece\, Emily. \nThis program will appeal to writers\, historians and genealogists who share the interest of bringing the past to the present and the discoveries made in doing so. I will sign copies of The Blue Box\, which will be available for sale at the event. \nI will also be attending the Kentucky Book Fair on Nov. 14\, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.\, at the Frankfort Convention Center. \nThe program is sponsored by the KBF and the Kentucky Historical Society.
