SUMMARY:Sallie Bingham: How Daddy Lost His Ear (NYC)
DESCRIPTION:“Sallie Bingham was one of the great ladies of American literature. Novelist\, poet\, playwright\, memoirist\, and short story writer\, as well as a philanthropist who passionately supported women’s causes\, Sallie was a central figure in America’s cultural life for more than six decades\, from the publication of her first novel in 1960. She was also a dear\, dear friend. \nSo when Sallie got in touch to say that\, at age 88\, she had a new book\, How Daddy Lost His Ear\, about to come out\, and asked about the possibility of an event to celebrate its publication\, I was thrilled and instantly said yes. Unfortunately\, just as we were finalizing the plans for the event\, Sallie suddenly passed away. \nNow\, Sallie had been aware that there was a possibility that when the time came she might not feel up to the rather arduous journey from New Mexico to New York\, so she had suggested that the event be a conversation between her and her publisher and friend Ruth Greenstein of Turtle Point Press\, not just about Sallie and her book but also about the vital role of small presses and their contribution to today’s literature\, with the idea that\, if Sallie were not able to be at the event\, it could still take place with Ruth. And\, of course\, we will honor Sallie’s wishes\, although\, under the circumstances\, it will not be a great surprise if the event were to take on the tone of an unofficial tribute to Sallie herself. In addition\, one of Sallie’s sons\, Chris Iovenko\, himself a distinguished science writer and documentary film maker\, has agreed to come from Los Angeles to take part in the event. The evening will also include readings from Sallie’s new book by Chris Iovenko and by award-winning actress and author Leslie Sara Carroll”—Spence Porter \nAdvanced purchased of tickets is required—no tickets will be sold at the door. \nMore Information and Tickets

SUMMARY:The 9th Annual Taos Writers Conference
DESCRIPTION:A full weekend of workshops on fiction\, creative nonfiction\, memoir\, poetry\, essays & more!\nLimited-seating live sessions as well as online via Zoom.\n\nI’ll be presenting a three hour intensive on Saturday to introduce and develop the use of all five senses in writing fiction\, nonfiction or poetry\, specifically focusing on the sense of smell. Although often considered the most evocative of the five senses\, writers seldom use its power to create and communicate both physical settings and emotional states. \nEach participant should bring an item whose smell–bad or good–is evocative. We will write a paragraph describing the memories\, thoughts or feelings this smell inspires. We will read these paragraphs and imagine ways it might lead to a scene in your memoir. \nI will bring some samples from my box labeled\, “A Writer’s Nose”\, including a cigar\, saffron\, lavender etc. We will each chose one of these samples and write a paragraph describing the smell and what memories or feelings or thoughts it inspires. We will read these aloud and comment. \nThe sense of taste is associated with the sense of smell. In fact\, someone who loses one often loses the other. You may want to include the sense of taste\, as in Marcel Proust’s description in “In Search of Lost Time”: \n“The taste was that of was that of a little piece of madeleine which on Sunday mornings when I went to say good morning to her in her bedroom\, my aunt Leonie used to give me\, dipping it first in her cup of tea…” \nButtery? Sugary? Proust doesn’t say. But we are free to imagine. \n\nFaculty Reading and Book Signing on Saturday\, July 26th\, 2025\, at 5:30pm \nLunch roundtable discussions on Self-Publishing and Publishing Short Stories \nEarly Bird Registration by end of day 6/28/25: \n\n$499 all three days\, including faculty readings\, keynote reading\, receptions\, and lunch roundtable discussions\n$335 for three weekend workshops (3 hours each) plus all of the above\n$175 Friday Intensive (6 hours) only plus all of the above\n\nLate registration beginning 6/29/25 \n\n$569 for all three days\n$385 for all three weekend workshops\n$199 for Friday Intensive\n\nKeynote reading (only) by Nick Flynn: Friday\, 7/25/25 at 5:30pm\, $10/SOMOS members; $15/nonmembers \nEnroll

SUMMARY:Beyond Memoir: Empowering the Imagination by Writing Historical Fiction – Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:To prepare for this workshop\, please read my book Taken by the Shawnee. \nThe workshop will begin with a discussion of memoir; if you are working on one\, you will have a chance to read five pages and discuss. We will consider the questions “how does memoir differ from historical fiction?” and “what value can knowledge of the history of a time and place add to these genres?” We will discuss Margaret Erskine’s brief account of her four years in a Shawnee camp and consider how research expands her memoir. Finally\, using an example from your own experience\, you will present a short biographical draft (under five pages) incorporating research-informed historical details to expand the subject’s time and place. \nThis class is suitable for intermediate levels. \nFor more information and to register\, visit the Carnegie Center website.

SUMMARY:Reading with Rebecca Reynolds at SOMOS\, in Taos
DESCRIPTION:On November 1st\, I’ll be reading with Rebecca Reynolds for the 8th Annual Prose Month at SOMOS. The event is free. I hope you’ll join us! \nRebecca Reynolds has pioneered new methods and models to bring about change in diverse and far-reaching projects under the auspices of her firm\, Rebecca Reynolds Consulting. She works with organizations and leads multi-entity projects\, advises executives\, coaches teams and individuals\, and mentors emerging entrepreneurs. She writes fiction and nonfiction. \nThresholds of Change: The Way through Transformational Times offers a timely and hopeful approach to how we think about change\, based on the author’s 30-year career bringing about change in hundreds of projects\, crossing disciplines\, locations and people. Instead of approaching change from whether we like it or want it\, Reynolds suggests looking for what it wants from us. Change\, like the seasons\, is a distinct process with its own sequence of phases. She offers a clear picture of how the process works — the mechanics that operate no matter where change happens or how we react to it. This underlying process can be learned and with it\, our innate ability to adapt increases. With this universal process\, we’re able to navigate change with greater ease\, confidence\, and purpose. And we’re able to use the changes in our lives as they’re intended: the way to reach our human potential.

SUMMARY:"Taken by the Shawnee" with Author Sallie Bingham
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this free event at the Main Branch is now open and required. \nRegister \nIn a most unusual portrait of early America\, a young mother’s years in captivity with the Shawnee prove to be the best years of her life. \nIt’s 1779 and a young white woman named Margaret Erskine is venturing west from Virginia\, on horseback\, with her baby daughter and the rest of her family. She has no experience of Indians\, and has absorbed most of the prejudices of her time\, but she is open-minded\, hardy\, and mentally strong\, a trait common to most of her female descendants–Sallie Bingham’s ancestors. \nBingham had heard Margaret’s story since she was a child but didn’t see the fifteen pages Margaret had dictated to her nephew a generation after her captivity until they turned up in her mother’s blue box after her death. Devoid of most details\, this restrained account inspired Bingham to research and imagine and fill the gaps in her story and to consider the tough questions it raises. How did Margaret\, our narrator\, bear witnessing the murder of her infant? How did she survive her near death at the hands of the Shawnee after the murder of the chief? Whose father was her baby John’s\, born nine months after her taking? And why did her former friends in Union West Virginia turn against her when\, ransomed after four years\, she reluctantly returned? \nThis is the seldom told story of the making of this country in the years of the Revolution\, what it cost in lives and suffering\, and how one woman among many not only survived extreme hardship\, but flourished. \n“Bingham recounts this fascinating story of capture\, survival\, progress\, healing\, and return with lush descriptions and respect for all involved with Margaret’s complicated story. She is a smart and empathetic writer\, and has created an awesome account of female survival at a horrific time.”— Booklist

SUMMARY:"Taken by the Shawnee" with Author Sallie Bingham
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this free event at the Southside Branch is now open and required.

SUMMARY:Writing Memoir/Writing History – Spring 2024
DESCRIPTION:I believe that the genre of memoir\, somewhat overused now\, can be refreshed and made more relevant by considering the fact that when we write memoir we are in fact writing history. Especially as women\, we have access to the forgotten or ignored cracks and crannies of life. We rely on research\, especially with family documents and photographs—wills\, letters\, news stories\, obituaries—of people “of no importance” whose crucial stories are so often left out of official histories. \nThe class meets in-person on Friday\, April 26\, 4:30-7:30PM and on Saturday & Sunday\, April 27 & 28\, 11:00AM–2:00PM \nThis class is suitable for intermediate level writers. \nRegistration for this in-person workshop is now open.

SUMMARY:Kathy Schulz\, The Underground Railroad in Ohio
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be interviewing Kathy Schultz on her book\, The Underground Railroad in Ohio. We’ll talk from 6-7pm and then sign books following the discussion. \nThis event will also be livestreamed on Zoom. You may register at this link. \nFrom Collected Works: \nTwo “daughters of the Ohio Valley” whose works have been inspired by their ancestors will share their stories and discuss the impact on their writings. \nDuring a dark time in our history\, thousands of freedom seekers traveled the Underground Railroad though Ohio. The Buckeye State hosted about half of all fugitive slave traffic of the antebellum era. A mix of Northern and Southern settlers in the state added drama to a struggle that led to major benefits for the state and the country. Unfortunately\, this epic past was obscured by silence and secrecy and then distorted with misinformation and folklore—until now. Author and native Ohioan Kathy Schulz accurately details the development and workings of Ohio’s Underground Railroad with true stories of Addison White\, John Parker and others. \nLogistics: \nThere is a ramp off the Water Street parking for anyone in a wheelchair and we can provide adequate reserved space to accommodate same. It calls for a longer walk than coming in the Galisteo Street door\, where one can be dropped with a one-step off the sidewalk. Please let us know about wheelchair access needed or anyone on a walker or whatever to prefer that entrance. Call the store when you are in the parking lot\, and we can go out and escort. \nWheelchair reserve space is to the left of the stage\, up front. In addition\, we will reserve nine spaces in the first two rows directly in front of the stage for your use.

SUMMARY:Readings with Authors Joan Brooks Baker & Sallie Bingham
DESCRIPTION:Joan Brooks Baker was born in 1944\, and brought up in New York City by dyed-in-the-wool Southern parents. At age eleven she was taught how to make a pinhole camera with a shoebox\, which she took\, along with her deep curiosity\, down the city’s streets\, Central Park or just simply the subway. She came to understand that she was making mental snapshots in order to create sense out of the chaos in her life. \nJoan has exhibited her photographs and photographic monoprints in several galleries\, mainly in Santa Fe\, New Mexico and New York City. The United Nations “70 women from 50 countries” exhibit featured Joan’s images of India’s female garbage workers. \nHer work has been featured in Cross by Kelly Klein\, Searching for Mary Magdalene: A Journey Through Art and Literature by Jane Lahr\, Ms. Magazine\, Men’s Vogue and Town & Country magazine\, The Dead Mule of Southern Literature; Symbols of Faith\, A Visual Journey to the Historic Churches of New Mexico\, to name a few. Her last photographic project\, and one that spanned several years\, was of The Black Madonna. In her search to find the meaning of this icon’s legend\, Joan began to relate the Black Madonna’s narrative to women she admired and to herself. \nIt was through the Black Madonna presentation that she was inspired to write her memoir\, The Magnolia Code. \nLearn more about Joan Brooks Baker at https://www.joanbrooksbaker.com/
