SUMMARY:Sallie Bingham: How Daddy Lost His Ear (NYC)
DESCRIPTION:“Sallie Bingham was one of the great ladies of American literature.  Novelist\, poet\, playwright\, memoirist\, and short story writer\, as well as a philanthropist who passionately supported women’s causes\, Sallie was a central figure in America’s cultural life for more than six decades\, from the publication of her first novel in 1960.  She was also a dear\, dear friend. \nSo when Sallie got in touch to say that\, at age 88\, she had a new book\, How Daddy Lost His Ear\, about to come out\, and asked about the possibility of an event to celebrate its publication\, I was thrilled and instantly said yes.  Unfortunately\, just as we were finalizing the plans for the event\, Sallie suddenly passed away.   \nNow\, Sallie had been aware that there was a possibility that when the time came she might not feel up to the rather arduous journey from New Mexico to New York\, so she had suggested that the event be a conversation between her and her publisher and friend Ruth Greenstein of Turtle Point Press\, not just about Sallie and her book but also about the vital role of small presses and their contribution to today’s literature\, with the idea that\, if Sallie were not able to be at the event\, it could still take place with Ruth.  And\, of course\, we will honor Sallie’s wishes\, although\, under the circumstances\, it will not be a great surprise if the event were to take on the tone of an unofficial tribute to Sallie herself.  In addition\, one of Sallie’s sons\, Chris Iovenko\, himself a distinguished science writer and documentary film maker\, has agreed to come from Los Angeles to take part in the event. SUMMARY:The Blue Box To Be Published by Sarabande Books
DESCRIPTION:My latest work\, entitled The Blue Box\, will be published in August of 2014 by Sarabande Books. \nFrom roughly 2008—2011 (I think—time has a way of lengthening\, then shortening dramatically)\, I’ve had the deep pleasure and privilege of working on a collection of papers found in the top of my mother’s closet after she died\, letters from long forgotten relatives\, mainly women\, in Virginia\, West Virginia and Georgia\, covering more than 150 years.\n\nI’m calling the book that resulted\, The Blue Box\, to commemorate the large\, sky-blue box in which my sister Eleanor found this treasure trove\, all carefully bundled and annotated by a relative I never knew who did the collecting and annotating fifty years ago before sending it on to my mother. \nPerhaps he hoped she’d read them; apparently\, she didn’t—there is only one sentence in her handwriting\, deploring a great-grandmother’s “religious fanaticism”. \nPerhaps he hoped they would go to an archive. \nThey didn’t. These women were not rich\, or famous\, or beautiful\, or well-known for scandals or achievements. \nBut they are united by an iron thread: they were indomitable. \nSewing pelisses to sell to survive the devastation of their plantation on the Etowah River in Georgia after Sherman’s march to the sea; turning their pretty daughters into stocks to be marketed to the most affluent available men; chasing down a scholarship to become the first college graduate in her family\, and then laying a four year siege to a reluctant lover: They did more than survive.
